Workshops Winter 2009

The Broadsheet in Woodcut with Penelope Bennett

Tuesdays, 1/20-2/10, 6-9pm

$185 + $15 materials fee
Political expression in the form of the broadsheet can be a democratic choice for artists, or for anyone who has something to say about these times (and who doesn't?) Using the woodcut as our method, and with the example of artists from Hogarth, Goya, to Ben Shahn and Frasconi, we will pursue this means to have our say beyond the ballot box.

Penelope Bennett was born in London, England, where she received her early education. Later her family emigrated to the United States, and in New York she attended Hunter College (where she majored in art) as well as Cooper Union.

After working in design for five years, she returned to Europe, setting up my studio in Catalonia, where she was able to devote herself to art for thirteen years. During that sojourn in Spain, inspired by the harsh contrast between sunshine and shade, she found herself drawn to making woodcuts and linocuts. Later, returning to the United States, she came to live in Vermont, and bought a sizeable printing press, realizing that the print medium of today is one of the most thriving, inventive and rich art forms. She was able to increase her printmaking skills at Two Rivers Printmaking Workshop, where she learned to make etchings, drypoint, monoprint and wood engraving.

Over the years she has shown her works in Spain, England (the Royal Academy), and the US, she had been commissioned to make print editions, and have received commissions from the City University of New York for graphic murals. Her prints are in the collections of the University of Vermont, the University of New Hampshire, Dartmouth College's Hood Museum, St. Joseph College, Minnesota, Museo de Bellas Artes, Mexico City, as well as in private collections.

Polyester Plates & Photo-lithography With Rebekah Tolley

Saturday and Sunday, 3/14-3/15, 10-4pm

$175 + $15 materials fee
Polyester plates are a simple and versatile introduction to printmaking. In addition to holding traditional drawing and washes, these plates are great for those interested in incorporating photocopied or digital elements in their work, quickly and easily. It is compatible with all other methods of printmaking and can be printed on any printing press or by hand. Polyester Plates eliminate the processing and chemicals of traditional lithography, making it suitable for those interested in non-toxic printmaking. This workshop will explore a variety of ways a plate can be imaged, including drawing, washes, photocopying or printing digitally generated imagery directly from the computer onto the plate. The workshop will also explore traditional photo-lithography using pre-sensitized plates for those interested in photography based work. Students should bring brushes, kitchen sponges, waterproof pens, markers, and files of digital imagery, as well as, smooth Japanese printing papers, if desired.

Rebekah Tolley is a printmaker and digital media artist. She received her MFA from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. She is currently Assistant Professor and Gallery Director at Colby-Sawyer College, teaching in printmaking and digital media.

Monotype Madness with Lois Beatty

Saturday 3/7, Thursday 3/19, and Saturday 4/4, 9am-12pm

$50 per session, all materials provided. Register for one or more days.
These sessions are for those who want a user-friendly introduction to printmaking, as well as those who want to expand their monotype repertoire. Monotypes are closer to painting than most other kinds of printmaking. They are more approachable, they allow for spontaneity, and they feel less nicky. And yet monoprints can be as technically complicated as the artist wishes. We will paint directly onto Plexiglas surfaces, using etching inks and various texturing materials to explore a wide range of marks and surfaces. Trace monotypes and use of stencils will be among the variations of prints each class will try.
